The temple at Patan Devi in Balrampur was constructed by the former Maharaja in the 19th century. The Maharaja had a dream in which the location of the temple was revealed to him. This dream is connected to a devotee who used to walk from Bijlipur to Patan Devi every day to offer prayers. As the devotee grew old, he became unable to continue his visits due to his age, and this became his last visit.
One day, while the Maharaja of Balrampur was passing through the heavily forested area, he decided to take rest for the night. That night, a thunderstorm occurred with lightning. In the Maharaja’s dream, Devi Patan appeared and instructed him to construct a temple at the specific spot she would indicate. The next morning, the Maharaja learned that a large peepal tree had been struck by lightning and had burnt down, leaving a deep hole in the ground.
Following the Devi’s instructions, the Maharaja proceeded to build the temple. It was constructed using red stone and adorned with intricate carvings, employing skilled stone masons from Rajasthan. The main temple does not house an idol. Instead, there is a covered deep hole in the ground, and prayers to Devi Patan are performed over it.
